Charging company cars at home: In search of the right charging station

Which solution is the right one for your use case as a company car driver?

There are many reasons for company car drivers to purchase a charging station for their home: The company does not yet have a charging station on site, the employer is financing or subsidising the purchase of a charging station, or they would like to invest in a charging station themselves to charge more flexibly, conveniently and cost-effectively. Or a company car driver would like to charge the private EV in addition to the company car. What is important when choosing a suitable charging station? We have summarised for you which legal requirements apply to company car charging at home in Germany and which ABL charging solution is suitable for your individual application.

Settling electricity costs at home with my employer: What do I need?

If you are a company car driver and would like to bill your employer for charging processes at home, you need a charging station and an MID-compliant1 energy meter that only measures the consumption of the charging station. An MID-compliant meter measures the charged current and ensures that charging processes are traceable and transparent. The use of an MID energy meter is regulated in an exception to German calibration law. Certain framework conditions must be met on site.

An MID-compliant meter for billing the employer is authorised if the following conditions apply:

  • The energy meter only measures the consumption of the charging station, not that of other consumers.
  • Only the company car and no other vehicles are charged at the charging station.

What do I need as a company car driver if I also want to charge private vehicles?

According to the law, an MID-compliant charging solution, as described above, is no longer sufficient under certain conditions. Consequently, it is necessary to purchase a charging station that complies with German calibration law.

A charging station that complies with German calibration law is necessary if

  • private EVs are also charged in addition to the company car.
  • other EV car drivers (e.g. neighbours) can also use the charging station.

These requirements are defined in the German Measurement and Verification Act (MessEG) and the Measurement and Verification Ordinance (MessEV).
