It is very important to us that our home is energy efficient. In addition to high-quality thermal insulation and state-of-the-art heating, more and more often, this also includes a PV system. Clever, because the electricity generated by a PV system can be used not only for your cooker, washing machine and other household appliances, but also for charging electric cars. We've summarized what is important in this context and how you can charge PV power efficiently with the Wallbox ABL Pulsar.

How does charging electric cars with PV electricity work?

EV, charging station and PV system – You can choose between two variants for the interaction of these components: a stand-alone PV insular solution without connection to the public grid (off-grid) and a PV system that includes the home connection and is integrated into the electricity grid (on-grid).

If you want to use your PV system to supply your household with energy, compensate for periods of bad weather with electricity from the grid and benefit from feed-in tariffs, it is worth integrating the charging station into the home connection in conjunction with an intelligent charging and energy management solution. The electric car is then charged with PV surplus energy.

What happens when charging with PV surplus? Surplus charging means that the energy generated by the PV system primarily supplies the electrical appliances in your household and the surplus energy flows into your electric car. Energy is generated and transmitted as follows: Physical processes in the solar cells generate direct current, which is converted into alternating current by an inverter. This in turn supplies the various consumers in the building and the charging station with electricity.

Advantages of a household energy storage system: If you expand the PV system and charging station to include a stationary energy storage unit in your household, the climate-neutral and free electricity can be accessed not only when the sun is shining, but also at night and in unfavourable weather conditions.

PV surplus charging – these are the advantages

PV surplus charging ...

  • optimises self-consumption because surplus energy is always used to charge your electric car.
  • saves money, because pure PV surplus charging or a mix of solar and grid power generates no or lower electricity costs.
  • means flexibility, because the proportion of PV surplus can be adjusted and/or supplemented with electricity from the grid depending on the position of the sun and electricity requirements in the household. You always benefit from an optimum ratio of solar power and grid power.
  • is sustainable and environmentally friendly because you charge with climate-neutral energy.

These features make the Wallbox ABL Pulsar the ideal PV power supplier

In the Wallbox ABL Pulsar Solar Bundle or in combination with the accessory Energy Meter Pulsar, the Wallbox ABL Pulsar is the ideal solar power supplier for your home. Once the charging station has been commissioned by a qualified electrician, you can look forward to every hour of sunshine that you can effectively use to charge your electric car.

Charging solar power with the Wallbox ABL Pulsar means the following

  • Full control with the Wallbox app: You decide whether you want to charge exclusively with solar power or with a mix of solar power and grid power.
  • Phase switching: Don't worry. If the PV surplus is not sufficient for three-phase charging, the wallbox automatically switches to single-phase charging. At least 1.4 kW PV surplus is required for single-phase charging.
  • Energy monitoring: View the ratio between solar power and grid consumption in the Wallbox app.

Charging modes in the Wallbox app - Eco mode and Full green mode explained

Depending on the weather conditions, use the Wallbox app to select the mode you want to use to charge your electric car with PV surplus. To do this, you can choose between "Eco mode" and "Full green" in the app:

  • Eco mode: This charging mode measures the PV surplus currently available at the house connection. If this is not sufficient to charge the electric car in the desired time period, energy is automatically fed in from the grid.
  • Full green mode: With this charging mode, you can charge your electric car with 100% solar energy. As soon as 1.4 kW is available for single-phase PV surplus charging, the charging process starts automatically.

Tip: Would you like to know how much money you are saving through PV surplus charging? The Wallbox app has the smart feature "electricity costs". Set an electricity rate and estimate costs and savings for charging processes.
